Corewell Health receives funding to improve the health of Michigan’s mothers and newborns
Corewell Health is named an awardee of Action for Women’s Health to help provide mothers with comprehensive care following childbirth.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., November 13, 2025 – Corewell Health™ has been awarded grant funding from a global women’s health initiative to support the health system’s efforts to provide postpartum care for women and newborns. Over 4,000 organizations from 119 countries applied, and after a rigorous peer and expert review process, Corewell Health was named one of 80+ awardees.

The three-year grant from Action for Women’s Health will enable Corewell Health to advance its MI Postpartum Promise, a statewide initiative dedicated to helping mothers across Michigan recover and thrive after childbirth.

Between 2016 and 2020, nearly 60% of Michigan’s pregnancy-associated deaths occurred more than 43 days after childbirth, according to the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, highlighting the significant need for expanded and ongoing support for mothers. This grant will enable Corewell Health to develop and pilot an 18-month postpartum care model to improve the health, recovery and wellbeing of mothers and their newborns through medical, social and practical services.

“This grant empowers our teams to close a critical gap in care and provide mothers with the support they need after childbirth”, said Carlos Cubia, executive vice president, chief community health impact & belonging officer, Corewell Health. “We are grateful for this opportunity to strengthen postpartum services and improve health outcomes for families across Michigan.”

Corewell Health will engage a broad network of community partners and specialists to coordinate the expanded postpartum care model – uniting medical providers, social workers, dieticians, lactation consultants, doulas, community health workers and others to support families throughout the entire postpartum journey.

Action for Women’s Health is funded by Pivotal, a group of impact organizations founded by Melinda French Gates, and managed by Lever for Change, an organization with a track record of identifying bold ideas to solve the world’s most pressing problems.
