GRAND RAPIDS, MI — November 12, 2025 — This year, an estimated 66,040 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Michigan. For many, the biggest barrier to lifesaving treatment isn’t the treatment itself, it’s getting there. That’s why Corewell Health is sponsoring the American Cancer Society’s Road To Recovery® program and helping to expand its impact by improving access to care for cancer patients across Michigan.
The Road To Recovery program provides free rides to treatment for people with cancer, and with Corewell Health’s support, the American Cancer Society is actively recruiting more volunteer drivers throughout Michigan to meet the growing demand.
“Volunteering as a Road To Recovery driver puts you at the heart of our mission,” said Jennifer Nagy, associate director of cancer center partnerships with the American Cancer Society. “Even the best treatment can’t help if a patient can’t get there. This partnership with Corewell Health allows us to ensure more patients have access to the care they need.”
Corewell Health’s sponsorship will help expand volunteer recruitment efforts, increase awareness of transportation barriers and ultimately ensure that more Michigan residents can complete their cancer treatment without interruption.
“Corewell Health is proud to support the Road To Recovery program and help eliminate transportation as a barrier to care,” said Barbara Schmidtman, Ph.D., vice president of operations for cancer care at Corewell Health. “Together, we’re making a meaningful difference in the lives of cancer patients across the state.”
Volunteer drivers of the Road To Recovery program must be between the ages of 18 and 84, have a valid driver’s license, pass a background check and have access to a safe, reliable vehicle. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to stay up-to date-with COVID vaccinations.
You can change someone’s life in as little as one hour per week by volunteering as a Road To Recovery driver. Help ensure a safe ride is available so care isn’t stopped or delayed. To learn more about Road To Recovery volunteer opportunities, please visit cancer.org/drive or call 1.800.227.2345.
