TROY, Mich., Nov. 21, 2024 – Corewell Health™ Beaumont Troy Hospital is the first hospital in Michigan to acquire the da Vinci 5 surgical robot (dV5). This week, the hospital will perform its first surgery using the innovative robotic system.

“This is a milestone as this case will be the first in the state using the new da Vinci 5 robot,” said Bruce McIntosh, M.D., chief of surgery at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital. “This investment demonstrates Corewell Health’s commitment to providing its surgeons with the most advanced technology to ensure that they can provide the best care possible for our patients.”

The dV5 allows for increased precision with its additional sensors and has a force feedback mechanism that allows surgeons to sense the push-and-pull of the instruments during surgery.

“The force feedback technology is a gamechanger for our surgeons,” Dr. McIntosh added. “It essentially gives us a sense of touch by allowing us to feel the pressure we apply to a patient’s tissue, ultimately, leading to better control, less invasiveness and a better patient outcome.”

Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak will also receive a dV5 later this month.

The dV5 system will assist physicians performing colorectal, urology, bariatric, thoracic, gynecological and general surgeries.
