ROYAL OAK, Mich., April 29, 2026 — Corewell Health™ is now offering Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte (TIL) therapy at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, becoming one of the first Michigan health systems to provide this newly approved cellular treatment for advanced melanoma.
“Patients with unresectable or metastatic melanoma who have exhausted standard treatments now have a powerful FDA-approved option – and a renewed sense of hope,” said Ishmael Jaiyesimi, D.O., Cellular Therapies Clinical Program Director at Corewell Health. “Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte therapy represents a pivotal advancement in harnessing the immune system to fight cancer when other therapies have failed.”
How the treatment works
TILs are regular immune cells that the body has already sent into a tumor to try to fight cancer. These cells recognize cancer as abnormal, but there are either not enough of them, or they are too weak to stop the cancer on their own.
For this treatment, doctors surgically remove a small piece of the tumor, which contains immune cells already trying to fight the cancer. These cells are grown in a laboratory until there are billions of them. The strengthened immune cells are then returned to the patient through a one‑time infusion, helping the body more effectively find and destroy cancer cells.
“This is truly personalized medicine — your treatment is created from your own immune system,” said Jimmi Mangla, M.D., Corewell Health surgical oncologist. “By strengthening and returning those cells to the patient, we’re able to deliver a therapy that is uniquely tailored to their cancer and designed for situations where other treatment options are unavailable.”
Corewell Health’s commitment to advanced cancer care
By integrating this next-generation therapy into its cancer care program, Corewell Health is expanding access to a potentially life-extending treatment and reinforcing its commitment to leading-edge cancer care.
