DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 14, 2025 – Corewell Health™ is taking a significant step to address Michigan’s growing mental health needs by opening a new outpatient behavioral health clinic in Dearborn. Corewell Health Behavioral Health Clinic, located at 18200 Oakwood Blvd., is designed to provide accessible, high-quality care in a community setting, helping patients receive support before crises escalate.

The clinic offers a range of services for adults aged 18 and older, including:

• Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations
• Counseling and therapy
• Medication administration and management

Conditions treated include, but are not limited to ADD/ADHD, eating disorders, anxiety, grief, trauma, depression, PTSD and sleep disorders.

In 2024, Michigan Health & Hospital Association reported more than 1.2 million emergency room visits involved behavioral health concerns. On any given day, this means there are more than 155 patients waiting in a hospital emergency department for access to behavioral health services in Michigan.

“It’s clear that Michigan’s mental health needs are immense, and hospitals have long served as the primary safety net,” said Subodh Jain, M.D., vice president and department chief of behavioral health, Corewell Health. “This new outpatient clinic in Dearborn reflects a proactive approach – bringing care closer to home and helping to prevent crises before they reach the ED. By expanding access, our hope is to ease pressure on emergency departments and inpatient units, while improving patient outcomes.”

Combating the psychiatrist shortage

Corewell Health secured an $8-million grant from the State of Michigan to develop this clinic, which will serve as an outpatient training site for psychiatry residents, helping to instruct and retain highly sought-after specialists in the field.

“Michigan also faces a severe psychiatrist shortage, with millions living in designated shortage areas,” said Natalia Szczygiel, vice president of behavioral health operations at Corewell Health. “By training and retaining future psychiatrists, Corewell Health aims to close critical gaps in the workforce and contribute to improving patient access to mental health providers and services in Michigan.”

The facility is strategically positioned across from Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital and near Metropolitan Behavioral Health, a joint-venture inpatient psychiatric hospital between Corewell Health and Universal Health Services (UHS), enhancing continuity of care.
