Corewell Health expands weekend infusion services, improving access and reducing emergency department visits
Expanding access to critical infusion care when patients need it most.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 24, 2026 — Corewell Health™ is expanding infusion services for cancer patients at the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion to include weekend hours, increasing access to critical treatments while helping reduce unnecessary emergency department visits and hospital stays.

Weekend infusion hours are now available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, giving patients timely access to services such as hydration, blood transfusions and select injections. These are services that previously often required an emergency visit or extended hospitalization.

While the program is designed to support cancer patients, other patients such as those needing hydration during pregnancy may also benefit from these expanded hours.

Since launching on March 7, 2026, the infusion team has treated more than 200 patients. At least 66 of those visits would have required care in the emergency department, demonstrating early impact on both patient experience and hospital capacity.

“This is about showing up for patients when they need it most,” said Lindsey Poolman, BSN, RN, CHPN, outpatient nursing supervisor, cancer health, Corewell Health. “By expanding access beyond the traditional weekday schedule, we are removing barriers to care, improving safety and helping patients get the right care in the right setting.”

Previously, patients needing infusion services over the weekend often had no choice but to visit the emergency department or remain hospitalized until weekday appointments became available. Now, they have a safer, more appropriate alternative.

Beyond convenience, the change represents a meaningful improvement in patient safety. Many cancer patients are immunocompromised and avoiding the emergency department reduces their risk of exposure to infections.

Patients interested in weekend infusion services should talk with their provider, who can send a referral to Corewell Health’s infusion clinic.
