Matthew Sims, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, FIDSA, currently the director of infectious diseases research at Corewell Health, will assume the role of the inaugural Corewell Health East research medical director and Oakland University William Beaumont (OUWB) School of Medicine assistant dean for research.
In this role, Dr. Sims will be responsible for cultivating a successful regional research portfolio, mentoring research faculty and scientists, supporting OUWB medical students and faculty, and expanding collaborative research initiatives - both locally and nationally. He will join the Corewell Health Research Institute executive leadership team along with Paula Schuiteman-Bishop, MBA, MPA, Corewell Health vice president, research administration and Surender Rajasekaran, MD, MPH, Corewell Health West research medical director.
Dr. Sims brings extensive experience to this position in the areas of medical research, clinical trials and medical education. He graduated from Stony Brook University with an M.D. and Ph.D. in genetics, has a history of research with various funding types including federal, non-governmental and industry grants and has been the principal investigator of over 100 clinical trials.
He has held positions of increasing responsibility including, director of infectious diseases research, chair of the OUWB research committee, chair of the protocol review committee and the scientific review committee and board member of Michigan Infectious Diseases Society from 2019-2023.
During the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sims led significant research efforts at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, including designing and running three major investigator-initiated studies. He also holds board certifications in internal medicine and infectious diseases, and has been recognized with numerous awards, including Crain’s Healthcare Hero in 2021.
