ST. JOSEPH, Mich., Oct. 6, 2025 – The Corewell Health Care Center in St. Joseph is expanding its cancer care services with a new treatment option available for radiation therapy of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers. The care center now offers superficial radiation treatment (SRT) to people diagnosed with skin cancer and is the only health system in Southwest Michigan to offer this treatment.
A gentler treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers, SRT delivers a low dose of radiation directly to the cancerous tissue, destroying the cancer cells while minimizing scarring and damage to surrounding healthy tissues. This technology also has lower energy that results in less toxicity than before.
“Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world, and we see quite a bit of it here in our lakeside community of St. Joseph,” said Peter Paximadis, M.D., radiation oncologist, Corewell Health in Southwest Michigan. “Superficial radiation therapy is an excellent alternative to surgical removal of non-melanomatous skin cancers, particularly those located in cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face.”
Using sophisticated software, this new technology tailors each treatment plan to a patient’s unique needs, resulting in improved outcomes and greater patient satisfaction. In addition, SRT can treat various dermatological conditions, including keloids and other non-malignant skin lesions.
Patients undergoing treatment say they have experienced minimal discomfort and downtime, with no incisions, anesthesia or surgical scarring, allowing for a rapid return to their daily activities.
If you or a loved one has a skin cancer diagnosis, please contact the Corewell Health Care Center in St. Joseph for more information.
